Duc on Pearl

My gay friend Duc read something Pearl wrote about me. He wasn’t amused. I feel comfortable talking to him about my oddly perverse sexuality. Stacked up against his homosexuality I feel normal.

Dear Steven,

(I sent you this last week but your bloody inbox was full)

What is the meaning of this???

"I have a wonderful friend called Steven Vu, and i promised that i would
write about him on my 'sweet' journal.

TEN THINGS I LOVE ABOUT STEVEN VU:
1) he always makes me feel thought about.
2) he is good looking.
3) he is a brilliant dancer.
4) he always sticks up for me with horrible people who cant see past my age.
5) he makes me laugh
6) i took his trousers off in the middle of the street and locked him out :)
7) he is cultured unlike SOMEONE who doesnt like fruit or coffee or london.
8) he likes girly films.
9) he is from vietnam.
10)he is my hand warmer and one of my boys :) "

STOP IT RIGHT NOW. THIS IS GETTING SICK. Reading this, she seems oblivious to the fact that you have nasty, pervy, lascivious thoughts about her. Or maybe she is totally aware which just makes her sick in the head. Horrible people that can't see past her age? Sorry, horrible = sensible. And don't even get me started on number 6.

With love,
Duc

Weekly Media – Oriental Movies

Duc Tran

I haven’€™t written in a while- the reasons are too dull to be detailed here. This week I’€™ve decided to review two largely ignored Oriental films. There is something I like about Oriental films in general; horror is generally more intense, action usually better choreographed, any quirkiness just quirkier. My preference is not influenced solely by racial bias’€¦

Weekly Media – Pop is to music as Teen is to movie

Duc Tran

In recent years, the term ‘€œteen movie’€? has become distinctly dirty. In the same way that no credible musician appears willing to class their work as being of the ‘€œpop’€? genre, anyone with any sense of proud pretension is very unlikely to admit their fondness for a film genre long associated with shallow characters, laughably derivative plots and hand-stuck-to-the-penis jokes. However, as with a trip to a vintage clothes store (or indeed TK Maxx), genuine greats can be found amongst piles of steaming, soiled rubbish. This week I review two of my all-time favourites:

Weekly Media – L’Appartement

Duc Tran

Following BT’€™s very successful narcissism-themed review, I had every intention to emulate (shamelessly rip-off) the concept. However, for reasons I cannot explain, the only theme I could think of was that of ‘€œMacaulay Culkin: the Wilderness Years’€?. Unfortunately, since his mid-nineties disappearance into obscurity, Macaulay’€™s career seems to have struggled to regain the momentum it once had: his filmography as an adult performer amounting to the paltry sum of two films as a result. Perhaps when Macaulay finishes defending the man who allegedly did not molest him and completes another, that themed review shall materialise. Until that day arrives, however, you’€™ll have to make do with my thoughts on the French romantic thriller L’€™Appartement and its Hollywood remake:

L’€™Appartement (1996- French with subtitles)

Weekly Media – Columnist – Duc Tran

Duc Tran

“I have chosen to review films- hopefully of the highbrow/obscure variety- old and new- with the strong possibility of the occasional lowbrow guilty pleasure. I have to warn you though, I’€™m no film buff: I haven’€™t even seen The Godfather and I count the arguably risible Muriel’€™s Wedding as one of my favourite movies of all time. Really, I just want to use Spieloff as a way to draw attention towards releases that have moved/amused/annoyed me enough to warrant writing a review about. I also work in a video store where in return for the unenviable task of doling out soft-core pornos to men with dirty fingernails, I get free rentals. And the minimum wage, of course. ”
