Chai Mui: Strange Drunken Chinese Game
After feeling odd discussing GCSEs, Chris’s Girlfriend decided to teach me a random Chinese game which all the cool kids were playing in the club. Something weird about seeing 20 year olds playing variations of Rock-Paper-Scissors all night long.
So you’ve got to learn a lil Cantonese. The music was rather loud so I doubt I even have the phonetics right.
Both players start with both hands facing out opposite the opposition. The idea is to shout closed / five / ten / fifteen / open and place your hands out accordingly. The opposition has to mimic the position as fast as possible. So if I shout 15 and show one hand the opposition has to open both of his hands to make fifteen. This happens at a staggeringly fast rate.
If you win, it’s your turn again. The game continues indefinitely and is usually accompanied by a forfeit of drinks.
Edit: Name of the game is apparently Chai Mui.
There’s something vaguely strange and nostalgic about your article… reminscent very much of a nineteen-eighties/nineties HongKong… Did i miss out on a time travel trip back to a triad run club in Causeway Bay (Tung Lor Wan)?
